Oredockers Get 1st Win; Beat Merrill 41-6
Playing for the first time in 3 weeks, the Ashland Oredockers exploded for 4 touchdowns in a 12-minute period from the middle of the 2nd quarter to the middle of the 3rd to defeat the Merrill Blue Jays at Oredocker Stadium, 41-6. Ashland had had games against Antigo and Mosinee cancelled due to COVID-19 protocols. After a scoreless first quarter, the Oredockers took possession at their own 26 with 8:01 left in the half. On the second play from scrimmage, Parker Goodreau broke free for a 66-yard run to the Merrill 5-yard line. Goodreau then scored the game's first touchdown on 3rd-and-goal from the one with 5:50 left. Cody Lustig added the extra point kick to make it 7-0. Following the kickoff, Merrill picked up one first down before facing a 4th-and-8 at midfield. A pass completion came up two yards short of the first down and the Oredockers took over at their 44. The Oredockers had a first down at the Merrill 42, but a holding penalty put them back on the 50. On 3rd-down-and-18, quarterback Kade Jolma hit Marcus Kruzan in stride for a touchdown strike with 29.8 seconds left in the half. Lustig's kick made it 14-0. But the Oredockers weren't through yet. After the kickoff, a Blue Jay's pass was intercepted by Kruzan and returned to the Merrill 7. Goodreau scored his second touchdown from there with just 8.8 seconds left in the half, and the Oredockers led, 21-0, at halftime.
Ethan Peterson returned the 2nd half kickoff to the Ashland 47, and the Oredockers drove to inside the Merrill 5. But a fumble into the end zone was recovered by the Blue Jays. Merrill, however, gave the ball right back on a fumble that the Oredockers recovered at the Blue Jays' 29. The Oredockers had a 2nd-down-and-11 from Merrill's 16 when Jolma threw a screen pass to Goodreau, who took it into the end zone. This time, Lustig missed the extra point and the Oredockers led, 27-0, with 5:47 left in the 3rd quarter. On the first play of the 4th quarter, Lustig picked off a Blue Jays' pass in the end zone. After a holding penalty, the Oredockers had a 3rd down at their own 15-yard line. Jolma again connected with Kruzan, who had a step on the defender, with a perfect pass near midfield and Kruzan went the distance. Lustig's kick for the PAT was good and the Oredockers led, 34-0. Merrill then mishandled the ensuing kickoff and Ashland recovered at the Merrill 44. Hunter Chenier scored on a 1-yard run with 6:46 left and Lustig added the point-after. Merrill got a consolation touchdown against the Oredockers reserves with 1:45 remaining. Unofficially, the Oredockers outgained the Blue Jays, 397 yards to 181. Ashland had 246 yards eushing and 151 passing. Goodreau carried 18 times for 163 yards; Chenier had 55 yards on 15 carries; and Lustig added 27 yards on 3 carries. Jolma only completed 3 of 8 passing attempts, but all 3 went for TDs: 50 and 85 yards to Kruzan and 16 yards to Goodreau. The Blue Jays had 88 yards on the ground and 93 through the air. Ashland had 16 first downs to Merrill's 11.
