Oredockers Drop Opener to Tigers
The Northwestern Tigers rolled up 330 yards in the first half - 169 rushing and 161 passing - to defeat the Ashland Oredockers, 42-7, in the season-opener on Friday, August 20th, at Oredocker Stadium's Weikal Field. Northwestern finished the game with 457 total yards. The Tigers took the opening kickoff and marched 62 yards in 11 plays before being stopped on downs at the Ashland 18 yard line. But a short Oredocker punt after a three-and-out gave the Tigers a first down at the Ashland 34 and it took Northwestern just 4 plays to get into the end zone when Greg Ohman scored from 15 yards out. Dawson Kriske kicked the first of his 6 extra point to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead with 3:49 left in the first quarter. Northwestern scored 3 touchdowns in the 2nd quarter to take a 28-0 halftime lead. Ohman scored his 2nd touchdown on an 11-yard run with 11:11 left in the half, culminating 5-play, 40-yard drive. After the Oredockers' 3rd three-and-out of the game, the Tigers took over at their own 31 yard line. After an incomplete pass, quarterback Luke Sedin connected with Tanner Kaufman on a 50-yard pass play to the Ashland 19. Austin Schlies then ran it in from there with 8:36 on the clock to make it 21-0. On their next series, the Tigers took over on their own 26 and took just 4 plays to score, with the touchdown coming on an 11-yard pass from Sedin to Kaufman with 2:31 left in the half.
Ashland had the ball to start the 2nd half, but a nice gain on first down was negated by a holding penalty. Then, the Oredockers fumbled and the Tigers recovered at the Ashland 25 yard line. Sedin connected with C.J. Thompson on first down for the score just 34 seconds into the 2nd half. The final Northwestern score came with 2:23 left in the 3rd quarter when Kaufman ran 15 yards for a touchdown, culminating a 6-play, 62-yard drive on which Kaufman carried 4 times for 54 yards. The Oredockers averted a shutout when Parker Goodreau scored on a 37-yard run with 6:50 left and Cody Lustig kicked the extra point.

Unofficially, Northwestern had 271 yards rushing on 36 carries, with Schlies leading the way with 14 carries for 120 yards. Sedin, who failed to connect on his first three passing attempts, including two drops by the receivers, finished 6-for-9 for 186 yards. Northwestern rolled up 22 first downs. The Oredockers unofficially had just 87 yards rushing on 23 rushes, with Goodreau leading the way with 14 carries for 71 yards. Lustig had 6 carries for 21 yards. Quarterback Kade Jolma completed 4 of 9 passes for 47 yards, with Marcus Kruzan catching 2 passes for 40 yards. Ashland had just 6 first downs.

The Oredockers will be at home next Friday, facing the Hurley North Stars at Weikal Field. The North Stars beat Crandon, 48-0, in their opener.
